Biography
Before entering active political life, Geoffrey Kelley held several positions, in particular Chief of Staff to the Deputy Premier and President of the Treasury Board, Political Aide to the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Science (also the Minister responsible for the application of the Charter of the French Language), as well as Political Aide to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Public Security. He holds a Master’s degree in Modern Canadian History from McGill University.
Elected as MNA for Jacques-Cartier in the 1994 general election, and re-elected in 1998, 2003 and 2007, Geoffrey Kelley served, at various times from 1994 until 2003 as the Official Opposition critic for the following portfolios: Native Affairs and the North, family policy and international adoption.. He also served as Chair of the Committee on Public Administration (1999-2003) and Chair of the Education Committee (2003-2005). He has also been a member of the Delegation of the National Assembly for Relations with the United States (DANREU), National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL) (Vice-Chair 1998-2005; member 2007-present) , a member of the Quebec Section of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) (1998-2003; named President of the Section in 2007) and a member of the Quebec Section of the Ontario-Québec Parliamentary Association (APOQ) (1998-2003; 2007-present). From 2005 to 2007, Mr. Kelley was Minister for Native Affairs and a member of two Cabinet committees – the Social, Educational and Cultural Development Committee (CMDSEC) and the Economic Prosperity and Sustainable Development Committee (CMPEDD). He now chairs to Social Affairs Committee.
A native of Montréal and resident of the City of Beaconsfield (located in the riding of Jacques-Cartier), Geoffrey Kelley is married to Judith Harper and the father of five children. He is involved with several community organizations, notably the West Island Palliative Care Residence, the West Island Association for the Intellectually Handicapped and West Island Community Shares.
